FU football hosts Adrian College amid snow forecast

HANCOCK — Travis Wiltzius isn’t a big believer that bad weather can help a football team.

But the Finlandia University coach and his struggling team (0-7, 0-4) will take whatever edge is available Saturday when the Lions host Adrian College (3-4, 2-2).

With snow flurries and swirling winds forecast for the 1 p.m. MIAA game at McAfee Field, it’s anyone’s guess what can transpire. As of Wednesday evening, Saturday’s high is forecast by the National Weather Service to be 38 degrees, with a 70 percent chance of snow and rain.

“Both teams have to play in the same weather,” Wiltzius said. “We’ll see what happens.”

In a game versus Trine University last season, a few inches of snow and bitterly cold winds awaited both teams.

The Lions were able to stay in that game against the then undefeated Trine team and lost by just a 31-0 margin.

The Bulldogs (3-4, 2-2) so far feature a sophomore quarterback in Jake Wurzer, who has already accounted for 1,800 yards and ten touchdowns.

Two weeks ago, Wurzer passed for 403 yards in a 34-31 league-leading upset of Alma.

“He (Wurzer) has a good arm and our secondary will be have to be ready to play,” Wiltzius said.

Wide receiver Henry Wilson has caught 29 passes for 743 yards and four TDs.

The primary Adrian runner is Trent Stone, who has 514 yards this fall.

The Bulldogs are coming off a 68-24 loss at Albion College.

Finlandia dropped a 58-0 decision to Trine last week and managed less than 100 yards of offense.

Freshman quarterback Darin Johnson has had his moments this season, but has been feeling heavy defensive pressure lately.

“It’s been a tough transition for Darin (Johnson) as it would be for any first-year player,” Wiltzius said.

Freshman tailback Bailey Harris has provided some punch on the ground since-mid-season. Sophomore Kenny Kujawa leads FU receivers in 2019 with 27 catches for 247 yards.

The Lions defense is paced by linebackers Christian Creten and Dave Carlson (Newberry).
