Huskies Hockey: MTU sweeps WCHA Player of the Week accolades

HOUGHTON — Michigan Tech swept WCHA Player of the Week honors Monday.

Sophomore Alec Broetzman was named the WCHA Forward of the Week, Seamus Donohue earned WCHA Defenseman of the Week honors, Matt Jurusik was named WCHA Goaltender of the Week and Parker Saretsky earned Rookie of the Week.

Broetzman helped the Huskies to a season-opening road sweep at Robert Morris. The Hudson, Wisconsin, native tallied an NCAA-leading six points on four goals and two assists with one game-winning goal, eight shots and a plus-4 rating.

Broetzman opened the weekend with the winning, shorthanded overtime goal to give Tech a 2-1 win over the Colonials on Saturday.

On Sunday, he exploded for a first-period natural hat trick as the Huskies scored five goals in the period en route to a 7-0 victory for a weekend sweep. Two of his three goals on Sunday came on the power play. Broetzman also added a pair of assists in Sunday’s win.

Junior Seamus Donohue recorded a pair of power-play assists in Tech’s sweep of Robert Morris on the opening weekend of the season. The North Oaks, Minnesota, native also led the NCAA with eight blocked shots in the two games. Donohue was part of a Tech penalty kill unit that was a perfect 8 for 8 on the weekend as the Huskies limited Robert Morris to just one goal in the series sweep.

Senior Matt Jurusik, from La Grange, Illinois, stopped 59 of 60 shots in the Huskies’ sweep of Robert Morris over the weekend. He recorded his third shutout as a Husky on Sunday with 25 saves in the Sunday win. His 0.48 goals-against average ranks second nationwide and his .983 save percentage was the second-best in the WCHA during opening weekend.

Freshman forward Parker Saretsky tallied four points on a goal and three assists to lead all NCAA rookies in points on the weekend. The Wainwright, Alberta, native’s plus-3 rating also topped all NCAA rookies. He collected his first collegiate goal in Tech’s 7-0 win on Sunday, scoring the fifth goal for the Huskies.

The Huskies (2-0) have their home opener is this weekend against Alaska (0-2). Puck drop is 7:07 p.m. Friday and 6:07 p.m. Saturday.
