HANCOCK — On the surface, this week’s matchup at Kalamazoo College looks like a slight break for the Finlandia University football team.

But Lions’ coach Travis Wiltzius says the Hornets (1-3, 0-1 MIAA) present a challenge for his winless team.

“They are a little down from last season.” Wiltzius said of Kalamazoo. “They were 4-0 when we played them a season ago. “But they’re still a very capable team and we’ll need to play our best football to have a shot.”

Kalamazoo dropped a last-minute 37-30 loss to Adrian College last week, while Finlandia was thrashed 63-6 by Olivet College.

The Lions (0-4, 0-1) hope to avoid their second quarter miseries. The team gave up 35 points last week, the third time this season an opponent has had a big second period.

“It was a 7-0 game, and we gave up an easy touchdown against Olivet early in the second quarter and it kind of got away from us,” Wiltzius said.

Freshman quarterback Darin Johnson has been steady much of the season, but has faced heavy defensive pressure from foes. Johnson accounted for 130 yards of total offense

A fine game game from freshman tailback Bailey Harris was a bright spot a week ago. Harris rushed for 54 yards in 19 carries.

Jose Eve and Kenny Kujawa are the main pass targets. Kujawa is the season leader in catches.

Ashton McNeil is FU’s defensive leader, with LB Taylor Bonetti and CB Marvin Anthony other keys.

Kalamazoo has a senior quarterback in Cam Crothers to run its motion offense.

There are two solid players in tailback Jared Pittman and flanker Anthony Giovanni. Bubba Wilson is a threat running and catching the ball.

Wiltzius says his team has its goals set for the season.

“We’ve got something going and we’re going to keep grinding,” he said. “It’s a long process but we have to keep at it.”
