Cubs get OF Maybin from Tigers

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs acquired veteran outfielder Cameron Maybin and two left-handed relievers in three trades on Monday, adding some help for their pursuit of their first division title since 2017.

The NL Central leaders sent minor league infielder Zack Short to Detroit for Maybin, who is batting .244 with a homer and two RBIs in 14 games this year. The Cubs got Chafin and a cash consideration from Arizona for a player to be named or cash. Osich was acquired in a deal with Boston for a player to be named or cash.

The addition of Maybin gives the Cubs a glut of outfielders on the roster. They also acquired infielder/outfielder JosÈ Mart”nez in a trade with Tampa Bay on Sunday, but he likely will get most of his playing time at designated hitter.

The Cubs also have lefties Kyle Ryan and JosÈ Quintana in their bullpen, but Quintana could return to the rotation after Tyler Chatwood left Sunday’s 10-1 victory at Cincinnati with right elbow discomfort.

Chafin has been sidelined by a left finger sprain, but he is expected to return soon. He recorded an 8.10 ERA over his first 11 appearances this year.

Osich, who turns 32 on Thursday, is 1-1 with a 5.74 ERA in 13 games this season. He played for the crosstown White Sox in 2019, going 4-0 with a 4.66 ERA in 57 appearances.

Chafin and Osich each do well against lefty batters. Chafin has limited lefties to a .230 batting average for his career. Osich’s number is .231.

Infielder Hern·n PÈrez and outfielder Ian Miller were designated for assignment to make room on Chicago’s 40-man roster.

Phillies acquire Brewers’ reliever Phelps

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies acquired right-hander David Phelps from the Milwaukee Brewers before Monday’s trade deadline for three players to be named.

The 33-year-old Phelps is 2-3 with a 2.77 ERA in 12 games this season. He has struck out 20 and allowed only seven hits, four earned runs and walked two in 13 innings.

“He’s a fantastic competitor and he expects to be perfect every day,” Phillies manager Joe Girardi said. “He’s going to grind it out every day.”

Phelps is the fourth reliever to join the Phillies in a trade in 10 days. They got Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree from the Red Sox and David Hale from the Yankees on Aug. 21. The team expects Phelps on Tuesday.

“I’m excited about it,” Girardi said. “It gives me so many options, experienced options, guys who have been used to pitching in the back end in the playoffs. It changes the complexion of our team.”

Phelps pitched for Girardi from 2012-14 with the Yankees. He was 15-14 with a 4.21 ERA in 87 appearances, including 40 starts. Overall, Phelps is 34-87 with a 3.83 ERA in 281 career appearances with the Yankees, Marlins, Mariners, Blue Jays, Cubs and Brewers.

“I feel you could put David anywhere,” Girardi said. “He’s added velocity. He knows how to expand up. He’s not just a sinker/slider guy anymore. He has a good curveball, a cutter. He’s been a really effective reliever.”
