Finlandia looks to bounce back

HANCOCK — The next opponent the Finlandia University football team will face doesn’t mind doing some traveling.

Lewis-Clark Valley College, based in Lewiston, Idaho, will journey 1,591 miles to face the Lions at 5 p.m. Saturday at McAfee Field.

“It is a very long trip for them (Loggers),” Lions coach Tim Driscoll said. “That’s why we moved the game time up to 5 p.m. to give them a little more time to get acclimated.”

Lewis-Clark Valley has already been to the Midwest once this fall, going to Chicago earlier to face Concordia-Chicago.

Finlandia, 0-2, will get back into action after a three-week layoff in its abbreviated 2017 schedule.

Driscoll said the break gave his 0-2 team the chance to heal some injuries. Also returning to the lineup will be cornerback Randy Parker, who missed the last game versus Lawrence University.

“It will help us to get Randy (Parker) back in the lineup,” Driscoll noted. “We also had the chance to heal some dings.”

In that game, the Lions roared back from a halftime deficit in dropping a 27-22 game.

Freshman quarterback Da’Lontae Johnson sparked the comeback with his passing and running.

But Dillon Hueckstaedt (Baraga) and Jaavaid Love also played big roles for the Lions.

Huecksteadt led the team in tackles (13) from his linebacker spot and caught a touchdown pass, while Love intercepted two passes.

The visiting Loggers, who are 1-4 on the season, rely on a steady passing game.

Senior QB Ryan Roth has completed 69 of 147 passes for 727 yards and 11 touchdowns. Colin Imel is his top target with 18 catches for 111 yards.

The L-C defense is led by Lucky Gaskill, who also plays on offense.

The invaders have approximately 30 players on their roster, close to Finlandia’s 25.

“We’re close in that respect,” Driscoll said. “It should be a competitive game.”

Finlandia will join the MIAA for the 2018 season.
