Munising edges LL-H in final seconds, 34-28

MUNISING — Christian Cole scored from two yards out with 6 seconds remaining to break a 28-28 and send Munising to a 34-28 victory over Lake Linden-Hubbell in a high school football game played Friday night.

The home Mustangs built a 28-6 halftime lead before the Lakes mounted a furious second-half comeback, scoring three unanswered touchdowns culminating in Carter Crouch’s 1-yard TD run with 2:35 remaining. Crouch also completed a 2-point conversion pass to Jesse Hill that knotted the score.

“We had about 2 1/2 minutes to move the ball downfield, so there was enough time,” Munising coach Jeff Seaberg said. “We had a couple of runs mixed in with some passes. Jesse Matson had a nice catch in that drive.

“We were able to do quite a few things on offense in the first half. We moved the ball well and won the line of scrimmage on both sides.

“Then it seemed like we came out flat to start the second half. At least I’m hoping that’s what it was, and not that we’re that bad.

“I think this will be a lesson that you have to play four full quarters of football if you want to be able to beat the kind of teams we have on our schedule.”

This was the Mid-Eastern Football Conference opener for both teams as Munising improved to 2-1 and LL-H fell to 0-3.

MHS quarterback Alec Blank accounted for three first-half TDs, including the only two of the first quarter when he ran in from 1 yard out and completed a 28-yard TD pass to Josh Huotari in a three-minute stretch late in the period.

The Mustangs’ Mathew Revord made it 20-0 about halfway through the second quarter on a 5-yard run, but Crouch immediately answered, running back the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for the Lakes’ first points.

Blank then had an answer for that, busting out a 78-yard scoring run about a minute and a half later to make it a 22-point game at the break.

Crouch scored on runs of 4 and 1 yards, with Aaron Hainault getting in from 1 yard out in between to knot the score.

Blank led all rushers with 107 yards in 10 carries, while Cole had 75 yards in 17 attempts. James Tuovila paced LL-H with 76 yards on the ground in nine tries.

Blank also completed 9 of 16 passes for 153 yards and one interception, while Crouch was good on 4 of 10 for 79 yards and an interception by Munising’s Revord.

With both teams collecting a dozen first downs apiece, the Mustangs held a 362-267 yards advantage.
