CALUMET — Lea Bjorn recorded a career-high 25 kills, leading the Calumet Copper Kings to a sweep over the Chassell Panthers (25-7, 25-20, 25-18) Thursday in a nonconference matchup in Calumet. 

“Lea Bjorn had an outstanding game hitting from the outside,” Calumet head coach Matt Laho said. “She also had some really tough serves. The team played well tonight. They had great passing on defense and serve-receive.”

Amber Johnson, last year’s West-PAC Defensive Player of the Year, finished with 16 digs for Calumet, while Brea Johnson had 13 digs. Niina Anderson recorded 17 assists. Bjorn led Calumet with seven aces. 

“Brea Johnson served well and had some great swings from the right side,” Laho said. “Amber Johnson played tough defense and passed serve really well.”

Next, Calumet goes to Hancock on Tuesday, and Chassell travels to L’Anse on the same day.

BESSEMER — The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes came away with a four-set victory over the Bessemer Speedgirls Thursday in Bessemer, winning 25-16, 25-13, 19-25, 25-16. 

“Somewhat disappointing in the sense that our serving still isn’t where it should be,” LL-H head coach Maureen Schick said. “Bessemer played hard, but our hitting was pretty good at times. Our passing and defense were solid, allowing Laura (Lyons) to make some nice sets.”

Lyons finished with 34 assists, while Maija Codere led the way with 13 kills, and Mariah Wilmer added 12 kills. McKenna Keranen recorded six aces. Erin Seppala led LL-H with 20 digs. 

LL-H’s JV topped Bessemer 2-0. Next, LL-H (8-1-2) will travel to Houghton on Tuesday.

L’ANSE — The L’Anse Purple Hornets were swept by the West Iron County Wykons (12-25, 16-25, 12-25) Thursday in a West-PAC contest. 

For L’Anse Megan Hendrickson recorded 15 assists; Brianna Keinz had six kills; and Stella Tortolini tallied a career-high 22 digs.

Next, L’Anse hosts Chassell on Tuesday.
