SAGINAW — The Michigan Tech soccer team came up short at Saginaw Valley State in a GLIAC contest 1-0 on Friday afternoon. The match remained scoreless until the 78th minute when the Cardinals notched what would be the game winning goal.

“I’m pretty proud of how we played and the effort we gave today,” Michigan Tech head coach Michelle Jacob said. “We created many good opportunities, but unfortunately couldn’t capitalize on them. Our own technical errors were what really cost us today.”

Total shots were close to even during the course of the 90-minute match with Saginaw Valley State (5-4, 1-2 GLIAC) holding a slight 13-10 edge. Michigan Tech (4-5, 1-2 GLIAC) got the first blast towards the net airborne on Friday when senior Sarah Boyd had her strike go just high of the crossbar in the 7th minute. Freshman Brooke Schauer then sent one just wide of the net in the 10th minute of the contest.

Scoring opportunities ended up being pretty limited for both sides during the opening period. The two teams combined for only five shots with the Cardinals picking up three of them. Their first chance of the day came in the 33rd minute when Molly Vanderhoff had her attempt deflected by senior goalie Kirsen Hudak. Hudak ended up making her second save of the match in the final two minutes of the first half to keep the contest scoreless going into the intermission.

The Huskies and Cardinals continued to trade shots back and forth through the early moments of the second half, but neither side could break through with the go ahead kick. The Huskies had one of their best chance in the 67th minute on back to back strikes by senior Taylor Archibald and freshman Jesse Jacobusse. Archibald just missed pushing Tech ahead when her attempt went off the crossbar. Jacobusse had a follow-up shot off the rebound, but unfortunately it cleared the top of the crossbar and sailed out of play.

The Cardinals increased the intensity of their attack on offense in the 78th minute and it resulted in the lone goal of the match. A Michigan Tech foul in the box setup a penalty kick for Saginaw Valley State and this time they were able to capitalize. Whitney Fleming found the back of the net for her third goal of the 2017 season. The Huskies had one final attempt to tie the match in the 82nd minute, but a shot by sophomore Jaime Brisson went just wide of the target to keep it a 1-0 game.

Schauer paced the Tech attack with three total shots followed by Jacobusse who had two attempts in Friday’s contest. Hudak played all 90 minutes in front of the net and made six saves, with an additional save being credited to the team stats.

Valentina Giambanco had a team high three shots for the Cardinals followed by Fleming with a pair of shots including the lone goal. Goalie Isabel Bauer played all 90 minutes and earned her fifth win of the season. Saginaw Valley State had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks in addition to their slight edge in total team shots.

The Huskies will look to regroup on Sunday when they travel to Northwood University for another GLIAC contest starting a 12 p.m. Tech topped Northwood 2-0 in the first meeting of the season Sept. 15 in Houghton.
