Amanda Young

BAY CITY, Mich. — Michigan Tech freshman goalie Amanda Young has been selected as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after turning in two solid performances over the weekend.

Young, who hails from Grand Rapids, Michigan, picked up her first collegiate victory in a 1-0 decision by the Huskies at Winona State Friday night. Young checked into the match in the second half and turned away 10 shots to persevere the shutout. Senior Sarah Boyd scored the game winning goal two minutes into the second period.

Young also entered into the match in the second period of Sunday’s contest at St. Cloud State and helped the Huskies remain in striking distance. She picked up three more saves and at the conclusion of the weekend had accumulated 13 saves during 90 minutes of work. In addition, she didn’t surrender a goal in either of the two matches.

Young and the Huskies will open the home portion of the schedule on Friday night against Bemidji State at Sherman Field followed by a Sunday afternoon contest against Minnesota Duluth. Friday’s kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. with Sunday’s match set for 12 p.m.
