Tech falls 1-0 to Northern Michigan on Senior Night

Emily Zeitunian dribbles up the field in Tech’s 1-0 two-overtime loss to Northern Michigan.

HOUGHTON– As a flurry of snowflakes pooled over the Michigan Tech Husky emblem in center field, seniors Taylor Archibald, Sarah Boyd, Kirsen Hudak and Olivia Smith took to the pitch for their final game at Sherman Field. Clad in winter coats and hoods, the players were accompanied by their families and honored before kickoff.

The slick, cold conditions made for a difficult senior night, and the Huskies emerged from the 34-degree game with a 1-0 double-overtime loss to Northern Michigan. With the loss, Tech finishes the regular season at 5-10-1 (2-6-1 in the GLIAC) and Northern Michigan improved to 4-10-2.

The winning goal came at the 104-minute mark when freshman Andrea Sekloch broke through the defense into the penalty box and sent the ball past a diving Hudak.

Tech has struggled to score all season, netting 12 goals in 16 games and getting shutout six times. The Huskies never scored more than two goals in a contest.

Both teams came out attacking in the first half, but had trouble putting shots on goal. Tech got its first good look with 17 minutes left in the first half when Emily Zeitunian got a through ball, outran her defender and struck the bright orange ball toward the left post. Northern Michigan keeper, Brianna Frontuto, made a diving save to stop the attempt.

Moments later the Huskies got another chance as Jesse Jacobusse snuck past the Wildcats’ back line, forcing Frontuto to come out of the net, but her shot hit the right post. Going into the half Michigan Tech had recorded five shots, with two on goal, and Northern Michigan had seven shots, with three on goal.

The second half proved to be more of the same: Plenty of good looks, but no goals. At the end of 90 minutes, the scored remained tied at zero, sending the Huskies and the Wildcats into overtime.

Boyd had back-to-back scoring chances with 30 minutes left in regulation. Her first bounced off the cross bar and the second sailed over the net, causing the senior to clutch her head in her hands, clearly aware that she had missed a critical opportunity. Boyd had three shots in the game.

Her third came with seconds reamining in the first overtime, when a pass sailed over the Northern Michigan defense and found Boyd streaking up the field. She was met by Frontuto who blocked the attempt at the edge of the penalty box.

Tech was outshot by Northern Michigan 17-10 on the game.
