Tech XC men win Bay Invite

FLAT ROCK — It was a great day for a college cross country meet Saturday as the Michigan Tech men and the Northern Michigan women took home the titles.

The Huskies won the men’s race with 24 points followed by Lake Superior State with 37 and Bay College with 85 to round out the top three.

“I’m very happy and pleased first off,” said MTU coach Jake Isaacson. “It was a good opportunity for some of our guys to step up and represent Michigan Tech on a different level. We did keep a handful of guys home to give some of these guys a chance to shine today. I think they performed really well and I think that the results sheet reflects that too.”

David Mitter from LSSU crossed the finish line first with a time of 27:15 with MTU’s Tom Bye right behind him finishing in 27:32.

“Tom led most of the race and it’s really exciting to see because he’s one of our best nordic skiers,” said Isaacson. “It’s exciting to see him put up a performance for us like that today. It was a very impressive showing from him today.”

Jack Miles from LSSU finished third with a time of 27:43 and the next seven runners were from MTU to round out the top 10.

In the women’s race NMU came in first with 15 points followed by LSSU with 44 and Bay College with 66.

NMU’s Kameron Burmeister blew away the competition taking first by nearly two minutes clocking in at 18:22. She was followed by Lucille Nunneley of MTU (20:08). The next four finishers were Wildcats before Rebecca Lathrop of LSSU placed seventh (21:19) with teammate Lydia Heimonen right behind her in eighth place (21:50). Daniella Kyllonen of MTU (22:06) and Trudie Mulville of LSSU (22:10) rounded out the top ten.

Zoie Berg (22:18) and Caitlyn Havelka (22:26) were the first two to finish for the Norse placing 11th and 12th.

“It was just a great effort on how they continue to improve,” said Murtha. “We’re taking minutes off of our times. We have a lot of inexperienced runners who are now starting to catch on with the months of training they have had in their short careers. They’re learning what it takes to be a runner and they know they can do it and that’s the biggest thing.”
