Jeffers beats L’Anse 7-2 to start hockey season 2-0

HOUGHTON — The Jeffers Jets hockey team secured a 7-2 win over the L’Anse Purple Hornets Tuesday, at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena to start the season 2-0.

“We are doing a lot of good things so far, but we know that we must get stronger with some tough games ahead,” Jeffers head coach Pat Nettell said. “It was great to see some of our new guys get on the scoresheet, and some of our veterans to show the way.

“The boys came into the game a little overconfident, in my opinion, and we were very flat in the first period. We seemed to come alive, and played a strong second with great puck movement and more effort.”

Clay Larson scored the first goal of the night, while Jackson Rocchi scored twice for the Jets. Ethan Therrian, Michael Johnson, Kellen Klein and Drew Harris each also tallied goals for Jeffers.

Foster Miller scored twice for L’Anse, and Craig Mantila made 65 saves for the Purple Hornets.

Next, Jeffers hosts Negaunee on Tuesday.

“I am happy to be at 2-0, but both me and the guys know that we have lots of work to do,” Nettell said. “We have some things to sharpen up on and some work to put in if we are going to be competitive with the teams we are going to face in the weeks ahead.”

L’Anse heads to Kingsford on Tuesday.
