Tech women defeat Ursuline

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio — The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team wrapped up an impressive opening weekend of the season with an 81-67 nonconference victory at Ursuline College Saturday afternoon. The Huskies outscored the Arrows 24-17 in the third quarter to create some separation but had to keep the intensity up to hold on for the win. Tech outlasted Davis & Elkins on Friday 65-48 in the GMAC/GLIAC Challenge in the 2017-18 opener.

“We played at a very high level and we were challenged by a very good Ursuline team,” Michigan Tech coach Kim Cameron said. “We had to keep our intensity level high on every possession and we were able to do that. Kelli Guy had a great game for us today and Hannah Stoll and Sarah LewAllen were excellent defensively. Our bench gave us some very good minutes as well and I’m very proud of our overall effort. We played better today and this was another really good regional win.”

Guy matched a career-high with 25 points to power the Huskies offense. Guy connected on 9 of 12 shots from the field and was 7 for 10 from 3-point range. She also dished out eight assists and grabbed four rebounds.

Hannah Stoll followed Guy with a new career-high of 16 points while hauling down eight rebounds. Kelliher contributed 12 points, Heise had 11 points, and LaFave matched a career-high with 10 points. Winter tossed in seven points and led the team on the glass with 12 rebounds and eight assists.

The Huskies will be back in action on Thursday and Friday next week when they travel to Minnesota State Moorhead and Minnesota Crookston for two more nonconference games.
