Winter named player of the week

HOUGHTON — Michigan Tech senior guard Lindsay Winter has been selected as the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week for her performances against Davis & Elkins and Ursuline in the opening weekend of the 2017-18 season. Winter helped guide the Huskies to a 65-48 victory over Davis & Elkins and an 81-67 triumph at Ursuline.

Winter, who hails from Clare, Michigan, had a career weekend for the Huskies, recording a career-best 29 points in the win over Davis & Elkins. Her previous career-best was 27 points which she posted in Tech’s GLIAC quarterfinal win last season over Ohio Dominican. In addition to her point totals, Winter established new career-bests in rebounds and assists over the weekend as well.

She pulled down 11 rebounds on Friday and followed it up with 12 rebounds in Saturday’s game against Ursuline. Her previous career-high in rebounding was 10 boards at Ashland in the GLIAC semifinals last year. Winter also led the team with a career-high eight assists against the Arrows, which topped the previous mark of six.

In the two games combined, Winter averaged 18 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists during the weekend. She found the target on 15 of 21 shots from the field (71 percent) and was 6 for 12 from 3-point range (50 percent).

Winter and the Huskies will be back in action on Thursday and Friday when they travel to Minnesota State Moorhead and Minnesota Crookston for two more non-conference games. The tip-off for Thursday game is slated for 8 p.m. EST and Friday’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
