Girls roundup: Chassell, L’Anse, E-TC, Ontonagon all earn victories

BARAGA — Chassell (2-1, 2-0) went on the road and defeated Baraga (0-4, 0-2) 40-33 in a Copper Country Conference game on Tuesday.

Chassell outscored Baraga 9-3 in the first quarter, which proved to be the difference in the game.

“Slow start again tonight,” Baraga coach Tom Goodreau said. “Allowed open 3-pointers and got into some foul trouble.”

Jenna Pietila led Chassell with 11 points and Milly Allen and Sydney Danison added eight each.

Baraga’s Jaylyne Lindemann led all scorers with 17 points.

Next up Chassell travels to Lake Linden-Hubbell on Friday at 7:15 p.m. Baraga (0-4, 0-2) plays L’Anse at the same time.

L’ANSE — The L’Anse Purple Hornets used a balanced scoring effort to blow by visiting Wakefield, 74-32 on Tuesday in a nonconference game.

Addison Mattson scored 14 points, Kailyn Voskuhl had 13, Taylor Brown and Josie Rice each added 12 and Maija Rice chipped in with 10.

“That is what you really want as a coach is to have balance,” head coach Scott Lloyd said. “We had good spacing, good movement, and the girls want to help each other and boost each other up so they are willing to pass it around.”

Sandra Libertoski led Wakefield (2-2) with 11 points.

The Purple Hornets opened the game by playing man-to-man defense, but eventually, Wakefield’s players suggested switching to a zone. The adjustment worked, and L’Anse outscored Wakefield 58 to 27 after they slid into a 2-3.

“We started in man to test their ball handling and it wasn’t bad, but the girls asked to play zone and it opened up the floor for us,” Lloyd said. “It paid dividends because we could get out and make long passes and that forced their girls to chase.”

L’Anse (3-1) also out-rebounded Wakefield 50 to 26. Brown added 15 rebounds to her 10 points for a double-double, and Nankervis added 13 rebounds.

REPUBLIC — A box-and-one defense on Ewen-Trout Creek’s Elise Besonen didn’t work as the Panthers beat Republic-Michigamme 72-30 in Tuesday night’s nonconference game.

Paige Berglund scored 10 of her 16 points in the first quarter and Abbie LeGault had eight of her 13 in the first, forcing Republic to come out of it by the end of the half.

“Our girls just moved the ball well and just shot them right out of the box and one,” E-TC coach Jacky Besonen said. “They did a good job of sharing the ball with each other, finding the open person. It’s good to see they couldn’t just box-and-one us. We have too many weapons.”

Besonen led E-TC with 17 points and had six steals as the Panthers were able to turn Republic-Michigamme over often.

“It was another good team win,” coach Besonen said.

E-TC (3-0) hosts Hancock Thursday night.

ONTONAGON — Ontonagon rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit to beat Lake Linden-Hubbell 48-41 Tuesday night in a Copper Mountain Conference game.

The Gladiators trailed 28-15 at the half and pulled within three, 34-31, entering the fourth when they outscored the Lakes 17-7.

“In the first half, we were not rebounding at all; they were getting second and third shots. We couldn’t throw it in the ocean when we were standing on the shore,” Ontonagon coach Dick Franti said. “We were fortunate, I think, to be down by only 13.”

The Gladiators remedied both of those problems and also picked up their defense in the second half. After giving up 28 points in the first half, they only allowed 13 after halftime.

“We just picked up our game generally, our intensity and doing things right,” Franti said. “We seemed a bit intimidated by their size and strength (in the first half). Comparatively, we’re a small team.”

Ella Menigoz led Ontonagon with 15 points and Jenny Labyak scored 12, picking up offensively in the absence of Holly Wardynski.

“They have to,” Franti said. “She’s going to be out yet for a while. It’s a high ankle sprain, I don’t know that we’re going to get her back until after Christmas. That’s one of our pieces. The puzzle still has to go together.”

Kierstyn Codere led the Lakes (1-3, 1-2) with 14 points.

Ontonagon (3-0, 3-0) hosts Dollar Bay Friday.
