Hancock shuts down E-TC to earn win; LL-H pulls away from Watersmeet

EWEN — Ewen-Trout Creek suffered its first loss of the season, as Hancock came back from 14 down in the first half to win the nonconference girls basketball game 45-35 Thursday night.

The Panthers were up 13-3 after a quarter and increased the lead to 14 in the second quarter, but they made just one field goal on 4 percent shooting in the second half.

The Panthers shot 40 percent in a solid first half and led 27-21 at the break. It would have been a nine-point advantage, but Hancock hit a half-court 3 off the glass at the buzzer.

“There was a reason they had three points in the first quarter, we were playing good defense,” E-TC coach Jacky Besonen said.

The Bulldogs outscored E-TC 19-1 in the third quarter to take control of the game.

“They played very aggressive, in-your-face man-to-man defense,” Besonen said. “We got shots off in the second half and we should have made them. I feel like their pressure forced us to go faster than we should have been going. I think the tempo they played with them being up in our face made us shoot them faster, in panic mode.”

Maddy Cronkright led E-TC with 13 points and nine boards. Mialy Brooks led Hancock (3-2) with 16 points and D’Andra Kero had 14.

E-TC (3-1) goes to Wakefield-Marenisco Thursday. Hancock hosts Bessemer on Monday.

LAKE LINDEN — The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes earned a Copper Mountain conference win with a 53-45 victory over the Watersmeet Nimrods Thursday in Lake Linden.

Laura Lyons led the Lakes with 17 points, while Erin Seppala added 10 points.

Watersmeet’s Bethany Baldwin led all scorers with 21 points.

“We stuck with them for most of the game and finally pulled away in the fourth quarter,” LL-H coach Maureen Schick said.

LL-H’s Joslynn Perala converted 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory. As a team, the Lakes shot 15 of 24 from the line.

Limiting Baldwin to just three points in the fourth quarter and the Nimrods to just five total allowed LL-H to pull away.

Next, LL-H (2-3, 2-2) hosts Chassell tonight. Kierstyn Codere left Thursday’s game with an injury and her status is still unknown.
