Houghton swimmers sweep Sault Ste. Marie

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Houghton Gremlins won another swim meet, with the girls topping Sault Ste. Marie 107-75 while the boys were victorious 93-71 Sunday in Sault Ste. Marie.

“I was impressed with how the kids bounced back from a long bus ride on Friday and a meet to compete hard against the Sault on Sunday morning,” Houghton coach Erik Johnson said. “We had a lot of strong swims and our divers looked really good, especially Andrew (Garland), and Autumn (Sanders) who had a personal best.

“Everyone competed hard in all their races despite many of them not feeling 100 percent. The Sault had some really good athletes, so it was a good test early in the season.”

Garland scored 160.60 to win the 1-meter diving, while Sanders had a score of 156.85 to win the girls diving event.

The Houghton girls won the 200-yard medley relay with Wonyoung Choi, Mikayla Sague, Tessa Meyer and Samantha Olson winning in a time of 2 minutes, 7.46 seconds. Olson took first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:15.68) and 500-yard freestyle (5:59.76). Houghton’s team of Ann Deroschers, Meyer, Olson and Choi also won the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:24.40).

Choi took firsts in the 50-yard freestyle (28.66) and 100-yard backstroke (1:14.26), and Meyer was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley (2:44.11). Sague won the 100-yard freestyle (1:05.13).

On the boys side, Houghton’s Leo Wheeler won the 200-yard freestyle (2:18.15) and 500-yard freestyle (6:14.69), Kevin Beaghan was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly (1:15.97) and Leif Odegard finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.25). The team of Beaghan, Samuel Fang, Cameron Jackson and Leo Wheeler also won the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:21.87).
