Houghton tops Esky; Calumet ties Utica Eisenhower

HOUGHTON– A four-goal second period lifted Houghton past visiting Escanaba 5-1 on Friday at Dee Stadium.

The teams were locked at 0 after the first period, but then the Gremlins found their stride. They got two goals from Kevin Bostwick and one goal each from Derrian Raffaelli and Dawson McKay in the second frame.

Juston Norkol tacked on another goal in the third period.

The Gremlins got assists from Seth Francois, Taavi Rajala, Patrick Donnelly, Bradley Gauthier and two from McKay.

For Escanaba, the lone goal was scored by Grant Wickham and was assisted by Christer Carne and Bryce Cooper.

The Gremlins outshot their opponents 51-11 over the course of the contest.

Next up Houghton (2-4-1) hosts Utica Eisenhower today at 1 p.m. Escanaba (1-3) travels to Jeffers at 2 p.m. on the same day.

CALUMET — After two scoreless periods, Utica Eisenhower battled back to take Calumet to overtime Friday at the Colosseum. The teams couldn’t find the net in the extra frame, and recorded a 2-2 tie.

Early in the third Calumet had a 2-0 lead on a second-period power-play goal from Gabe Coppo, and a third-period goal by Tanner Rowe.

Calumet got assists on the goals from Brent Loukus and Dean Loukus.

Then Utica took over for the rest of the period and tied the game with back-to-back goals from Josh Zarra and CJ Soltman.

Both goaltenders had strong performances as Salvatore Carabelli recorded 32 saves for Utica, and Alex Studebaker had 28 saves from Calumet.

The game saw eight penalties, five from Utica and four from Calumet. The Copper Kings converted one power-play chance, while Utica came up empty.

Next up Calumet (2-4-1) travels to Houghton on Tuesday for a conference game at 7 p.m.
