MARQUETTE — Marquette may have won the battle but ultimately lost the war with Hancock in a high school hockey game played at Lakeview Arena on Thursday night.

The Redmen kept the Bulldogs’ two big scorers, Alex Nordstrom and Teddy Randell, from scoring any points, but Hancock still pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory.

“We shut down their best two players, I think they might have 40 points between them already,” MSHS coach Doug Garrow said. “They’ve dominated every team they’ve played. We did some matching up with them.”

He credited the shutdown to his team’s forward line of junior Kobie Guidebeck and seniors Hunter Doucette and Rory O’Connor, along with the defenseman pairing of seniors Aydin Frost and Ethan Jones.

“I was happy with our overall effort and our physicality,” Garrow said.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring with an unassisted goal by Michael Stuber just over four minutes into the game.

The score remained 1-0 until Doucette evened things up with his own unassisted tally less than three minutes into period No. 2.

There was no more scoring until 1:33 into OT when Hancock’s Colton Salani netted the game-winner with assists going to Austin Salani and Bryce Randell.

All goals were scored on even strength as the Redmen (4-3, 2-1 Great Lakes Conference) were 0 of 4 and Hancock was 0 of 3 on power plays.

Marquette junior goalie Tyler Bergwall stopped 26 shots, including one in OT, while the Bulldogs’ Dawson Kero made 27 stops, 16 in the first period and none in OT.

Hancock faces Jeffers at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena on Saturday.
