Boys basketball roundup: Houghton tops L’Anse; Hancock, Calumet each earn nonconference wins

L’ANSE — Brad Sirard scored 28 points and George Butvilas added 22 as Houghton cruised past L’Anse 51-32, Monday in L’Anse.

The West-PAC Matchup was one-sided from the start as the Gremlins jumped out to a 25-8 lead in the first quarter.

Will Ramono chipped in 10 points for Houghton. For L’Anse Reese Waara scored 13 points and Alec Rajala had nine.

Next up Houghton (4-3, 3-1) hosts Gwinn on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. L’Anse (1-5, 0-4) travels to Chassell on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

BARAGA — Joe Watson scored 14 points as Hancock defeated Baraga 52-37, Monday in Baraga in a nonconference contest.

Devin Raasio recorded 12 points and Jamie Sintowski added 11.

The game was close through the first quarter as Hancock lead by just two points, but the Bulldogs closed the half on a 17-10 run, and controlled the contest from there.

Baraga’s Colton Lindemann scored 11 points to lead the Vikings.

Next up Baraga (0-7) travels to Bessemer on Monday at 7:20 p.m. Hancock (2-4) hits the road to play Dollar Bay on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

ONTONAGON — A 24-point first quarter propelled the Calumet Copper Kings to a 69-50 nonconference win over the Ontonagon Gladiators Monday in Ontonagon. 

Matt Ojala paced the winners with 24 points while Travis Ojala added 14 points.

Calumet (4-3) led 24-10 after the first quarter and never trailed after that. 

Ontonagon’s Ed Polakowski led the way with 17 points. James Domitrovich added 10 points. 

Next, Calumet has a West-PAC showdown Thursday at West Iron County. Ontonagon (1-6) hosts Wakefield-Marenisco on the same day.
