Bessemer’s Cade Mazzon scored 12 of his game-high 17 points in the first quarter.

“Cade Mazzon got us really rolling, he was our leading scorer, but by far his best quarter was the first quarter,” Bessemer coach Richard Matrella said. “That was our big quarter, too.”

Nick Trudgeon had 10 points for the Speedboys.

“I thought we did a good job rebounding,” Matrella said. “We’ve been working on stuff, so it’s been nice to start to see it show through. From an energy standpoint, our kids played great from the start to the final whistle.”

L’ANSE — Ewen-Trout Creek improved to 8-0 with a 69-35 victory over L’Anse Monday night.

It was only the second lopsided win for the Panthers, who have otherwise come out on top of some tight ballgames.

“That was nice to not have a nailbiter right down to the wire. We needed that,” E-TC coach Brad Besonen said. “We needed a game period. We had one game since Dec. 22. … We definitely had some rust early on.”

Jake Witt led the Panthers with 19 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks. He also had five assists. Eli Nordine had 18 points and six assists. Jaden Borseth finished with 11 points and six steals.

Cole Borseth had 10 points. Witt had 11 points in the first quarter to help give E-TC an 18-9 lead.

“We had trouble scoring in the first part of the first quarter, but a couple of dunks by Jake got us going,” Besonen said. “I thought we closed the first quarter with good energy, created some steals by pressuring and then started to look much better. We got up and down in the second quarter pretty well, too, just pushing tempo.

“I thought Eli played really well tonight, especially the last three quarters he really pushed the tempo, got out and ran.”

E-TC hosts Chassell Thursday night in a Copper Mountain Conference game.

L’Anse hosts Wakefield-Marenisco on Friday.

IRON RIVER — A cold shooting night for the Houghton Gremlins (5-4, 3-2) was their downfall in a 53-24 West-PAC loss to the West Iron County Wykons Monday in Iron River.

No Gremlin reached double figures, while Brad Sirard’s nine points were a team-high.

“A very poor shooting with lapses on defense snowballed into an ugly night for us,” Houghton coach Jared Lawson said.

Houghton trailed just 9-8 after the first quarter before the Wykons outscored the Gremlins 15-5 in the second for a 24-13 lead. WIC (4-4, 3-0) used a 22-7 fourth-quarter advantage to secure the blowout victory.

“Regardless of the outcome, I have no doubt this team will respond the right way,” Lawson said. “Looking forward to our next game.”

Next, Houghton heads to Ontonagon on Jan. 23.
