CHASSELL — It was pretty much the result you get when the first-place team in a conference meets the last-place squad.

And that made Chassell’s 53-22 girls basketball win over Dollar Bay Monday night very predictable.

“You sometimes get a game like that when you know the other team doesn’t match up,” Chassell coach Brandi Hainault said. “We weren’t quite clicking, but that was partially my fault. I was trying to get some playing time for some players who had missed time.

“But I thought we did some good things tonight. That will help us get ready for the rest of this week.”

The rest of the week for the Panthers includes a tough game at home tonight against Ewen-Trout Creek, and a Friday matchup in Chassell against a very respectable Wakefield-Marenisco squad.

“It’s going to be a tough week for us” Hainault said. “These are good teams coming up, but I think we’ll be ready.”

It wasn’t that the Panthers didn’t have some worries after last night. The foremost of those was an ankle injury suffered by senior point guard Milly Allen in the third quarter. Allen sat out the rest of the game.

Hainault said the injury appeared to be a minor one.

“I think she will be fine. She’s the kind of player who plays through a lot of things,” Hainault said. “But we’ll see how it goes.”

The winners, now 5-0 in the league and 6-1 overall, grabbed a 13-5 lead after one quarter.

Blue Bolts coach Steve Krahling said his team played reasonably well for a time.

“When you have a team like Chassell that is both talented and very big, your expectations aren’t going to be very high,” Krahling said. “But our expectation was that we were going to put out a better effort than earlier this season. We’ve done that the last two games.”

The Panthers received solid efforts from reserve Lela Rautiola and starter Meg Hokenson to move to a 26-10 lead by the half.

“I thought both of them played well,” Hainault said.

With a 42-16 margin after three frames, the Panthers emptied their bench in the final quarter.

Allen led the victors with 13 points and six steals. Hokenson added 10 points, while Rautiola put in nine more. Jenna Pietila chipped in seven points, while Sydney Danison collected a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Bolts, 0-5 in the league and 0-7 overall were led by Paige Isaacson with eight points. Emma Stout added six points and five steals.

“I thought Paige, Emma and Bobbi Jo (Caskey) played pretty good games,” Krahling said.

The Blue Bolts travel to Watersmeet Thursday and host Republic-Michigame Friday night.
