Finlandia hockey snaps 59-game losing streak with 2-1 win over UW-Superior

HANCOCK — The Finlandia University men’s hockey team (1-15-1) beat UW-Superior (7-10-2), Tuesday night at the Houghton County Arena. It was the first win since Nov. 20, 2015, ending a streak of 59 consecutive losses.

Finlandia freshman Marcus Gloss and Oscar Svensson were forced to make key saves down the stretch.

UW-Superior scored first with 1:07 left in the first period. Finlandia came back just before the end as freshman Curran Klein had a shot blocked. Freshman Hunter Kero blasted the rebound, which was netted by Svensson.

In the second period, sophomore Blake Peavey scored on the power play off a pass from freshman Cale Markham at the 3:47 mark. Gloss stopped two breakaway shots to keep the game tied at 1-1.

With 6:44 left in the period, junior Avery Huibregtse found the high right corner to put the Lions up 2-1. The third period was one of the runs with Gloss having seven saves in the first seven minutes.

FinnU then had a shot blocked and three near misses over a five-minute span. Finlandia stepped it up and allowed just one shot in the last three minutes to get the win.

On face-offs, sophomore Danny Hill had 14 wins and Peavey picked up 11 wins. Gloss finished with 30 saves.

Finlandia hits the road, Friday, Jan. 19 taking on St. Scholastica. The game is scheduled to start at 8 p.m.
