Girls basketball roundup: Houghton, Jeffers, Ontonagon all win

L’ANSE — The Houghton Gremlins managed to wear down the L’Anse Purple Hornets for a 51-33 West-PAC win Monday in L’Anse.

After the game was tied at 19 after the second quarter, Houghton outscored L’Anse 32-14 in the second half to secure the victory.

Houghton’s Harlee Froberg scored 16 points while Kara Pietila added 12.

“Our floor spacing got to be bad,” L’Anse coach Scott Lloyd said of his team’s second-half execution. “We couldn’t get anything to drop, so I think the girls just eventually ran out of gas. Houghton comes at you in waves. They have a deep bench and can run a lot of quality action.”

L’Anse’s Sarah Dix finished with nine points.

Next, L’Anse (3-7, 0-4) hosts Calumet on Thursday; Houghton (9-4, 4-1) hosts Escanaba on the same day.
