Hancock beats Ontonagon; No. 5 E-TC rolls; Baraga wins 6th straight

HANCOCK — Taylor Sebbas scored 13 points as Hancock (7-3) narrowly defeated visiting Ontonagon (5-5) 40-37, Tuesday in a nonconference matchup.

Sebbas struggled with foul trouble early, which put the pressure on a Hancock team that relies on her for scoring.

“She is really our only inside presences and threat to score,” Hancock coach Jack Johnson said. “When we put her on the bench, that threw a wrinkle into what we wanted to do offensively.”

Johnson said he felt as though his team was in control until Sebbas subbed out. Then, the contest remained tight until the buzzer.

Ontonagon’s press caused some trouble for Hancock, but the Bulldogs were able to limit the Gladiators with a press of their own.

“Defensively we came out pretty aggressive,” Johnson said. We were able to score a couple of baskets and put some pressure on.”

With 4:30 left to play in the game D’Andra Kero hit a 3-pointer to put Hancock up by five. She finished with nine points. Then, her sister, Marina Kero knocked down three free throws as the game wound down to secure a victory for the Bulldogs.

Next up Hancock travels to Chassell on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. Ontonagon heads to Bessemer on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

EWEN — Ewen-Trout Creek had 22 assists to eight turnovers in Tuesday night’s 71-40 Copper Mountain Conference win over Wakefield-Marenisco.

“That’s a stat I’d like every game,” E-TC coach Jacky Besonen said.

The Panthers also had 15 steals, including eight by Maddy Cronkright.

E-TC jumped out to a 26-8 first-quarter lead and didn’t let off the gas until the fourth quarter. The Panthers shot 54 percent from the floor in the first half for a 45-16 lead.

“We jumped out on them really quickly with our pressure and we were able to get steals,” Besonen said. “That took the wind out of their sails. They had trouble bouncing back from that initial run that we had.”

Four finished in double figures for the Panthers. Elise Besonen had 18, Paige Berglund 17, Cronkright 13 and Ava Moilanen 12.

“We had good balance with four girls in double figures; that’s awesome, I love that,” coach Besonen said. “We found the open person, we did a good job with that.”

Saundra Libertoski and Alexa Jilek both had 13 points to lead W-M.

E-TC goes to Drummond Friday. W-M (2-8, 2-5) hosts Lake Linden-Hubbell Friday night.

REPUBLIC — Chelsea Pittsley scored 16 points as Baraga (6-4, 6-2) defeated Republic 60-35 Tuesday in Republic. It’s Baraga’s six straight win.

Republic (0-9, 0-6) stuck around in the first half, trailing 23-17, but the Vikings closed the game on a 37-18 run to pick up Copper Mountain Conference victory.

“Republic did a good job of rebounding and keeping us from getting offensive rebounds,” Baraga coach Tom Goodreau said. “We pressured the ball and had some mental lapses allowing them uncontested shots.

“I gave the girls a spirited halftime speech and they responded with great hustle in the second half. The game resembled a rugby match at times and we got into foul trouble in the fourth. We were fortunate that we had girls step in and play well.”

Next up Baraga travels to Jeffers on Friday at 7:20 p.m.
