Locally, not much changed the with the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Week 2 basketball poll. The Chassell girls and Ewen-Trout Creek boys are still second in Class D, while the Dollar Bay boys retain the No. 3 spot in Class D boys. The Ewen-Trout Creek girls also remain No. 5 in Class D girls.

At the state level, the E-TC boys earned the No. 6 ranking in the Associated Press Class D state basketball poll, while Dollar Bay came in at No. 10.

The Chassell girls received no votes in the state poll; Munising is ranked seventh in the state.

Elsewhere in the U.P. poll, despite the Negaunee girls handing Marquette its only loss, 59-45 on Jan. 8, Negaunee somehow dropped from No. 1 and fell to No. 2 as the St. Ignace Saints took the top spot in Class ABC Girls. What’s even stranger, is that someone decided to give Marquette a first-place vote and ranked Marquette ahead of Negaunee, despite Marquette losing to Negaunee. Go and try to figure that one out. It’s things like this that give the UPSSA poll a bad name.

The only other major change was the Marquette boys moving to No. 1 after defeating No. 4 Gladstone 79-66 on Jan. 8. Marquette is 5-0 against U.P. teams this season and has the most impressive win to date: a 76-53 road victory at No. 3 Escanaba.
