Jeffers loses to Escanaba

WELLS — The Escanaba Eskymos came around in the second period Friday night as they skated to a 3-1 victory over Jeffers.

Esky trailed 1-0 after the opening frame before Blane Rinehart tied the score on a rebound from the slot three minutes, 44 seconds into the second frame.

Christer Carne added an unassisted goal five minutes later, giving the Eskymos a 2-1 lead.

Brayden Stannard concluded the scoring on a breakaway on a pass from Grant Wickham in the third period.

“That was a real nice play,” Esky coach Matt Hughes said. “Grant chipped the puck by their defenseman and caught Brayden in stride in the neutral zone. It was good for us to win, especially with this being Senior Night. They weren’t going away. They pressure you hard and they’re physical.”

Matt Halonen put the Jets ahead on a pass from Clay Larson six minutes into the contest.

“I think we gained some momentum in the second period,” Hughes said. “We had a slow start and getting scored on early didn’t help.”

Brodie Goddard stopped 38 shots for the Eskymos (7-18), who were outshot 39-21.

“Brodie made a lot of good saves, especially when it was a one-goal game,” Hughes said. “It was good to win at home. This prepared us for the playoffs.”
