L’ANSE — L’Anse put forth one of its finest defensive efforts of the season, but it was not enough to top Westwood as the Patriots earned a 52-42 nonconference win Thursday in L’Anse.

“We played hard tonight,” L’Anse coach Kyle Koski said. “We played the best defense I have ever seen my team play, ever.”

L’Anse trailed 20-19 at the half despite shooting 60 percent in the first half and controlling the tempo. For the game, Reese Waara led L’Anse with 17 points, nine steals and seven assists. Alex Kissel added 12 points.

The Purple Hornets (5-15) led by as many as seven late in the third, but Westwood rallied and took advantage of being in the bonus for the final 10 minutes of the game.

Down two with 90 seconds left, L’Anse went for a transition layup but missed as Westwood challenged the shot. Westwood took advantage and made a layup at the other end before clinching the game with free throws.

“We have come a long way this year,” Koski said. “We are playing as a team and playing with a lot of energy.”

Next, L’Anse heads to Houghton on Monday for a district semifinal.

MARQUETTE — Houghton found itself in a 12-point hole to start the second half against Marquette, and the Gremlins couldn’t recover, dropping a 50-24 nonleague contest on Thursday in Marquette.

“Our guys gave a solid effort physically on defense but at times we lost our mental focus playing D and it caught up to us against a very athletic Marquette team,” coach Jared Lawson said.

Next up Houghton begins district play at home against L’Anse on Monday at 7 p.m.
