Copper Kings, Jets split doubleheader

WOLVERINE — In a doubleheader in which both teams racked up a combined 39 runs, the Jeffers Jets and Calumet Copper Kings earned a split as the Copper Kings took the opener 15-14 and the Jets won the nightcap 7-3 Wednesday evening at Wolverine Field..

In the opener, the Jets held a 7-3 advantage after one inning of play after an half inning that saw them send 10 batters to the plate.

The Copper Kings clawed their way back over the course of the next six innings however, due, in large part, to the play of Brent Loukus. Loukus finished with a double and three walks. He also scored three times.

Dean Loukus, Gabe Coppo, and Nick Voelker all scored twice as well, taking advantage of walks and singles along the way.

Justin Heinonen took the loss for the Jets in relief.

In the nightcap, the Jets jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one and a 5-0 lead by the end of the third.

The Copper Kings struck three times in the fourth, started by a single from Coppo.

From there, Heinonen shut the door for the Jets. He finished the night with four strikeouts over six innings including the final out.

Elias Rajala led the way offensively with a double and single and two runs scored. Eli Larson knocked in both runs in the first with a double.
