Records set: Sayen helps Gremlins take WestPAC title

HANCOCK — It was a dominating performance by the Houghton Gremlins Wednesday as they ran away with both ends of the WestPac Conference track title.

The Houghton boys were crowned champions for the fifth consecutive year with 158 points. They were followed by Calumet 91, Hancock 50, West Iron County 36 and L’Anse 16.

“This was a real good effort by everyone,” said Houghton coach Dan Juntilla. “Dante Cyrus had a great day and Nikolai Huotari had a real solid day. Our pole vaulters did very well.”

The Houghton girls also won with a 169 1/2 points, followed by West Iron 73 1/2, Calumet 56, Hancock 34 and L’Anse 16.

Houghton senior Clayton Sayen was selected the Overall Boys’ Most Valuable Performer for the fourth straight time, setting three meet records and a school record.

Sayen captured the 100-meter dash in a school and meet-record 11.03 seconds on this sunny and very warm day at the Hancock High School track. He also set meet records in the 200 (22.94) and 400 (50.38) and helped the Gremlins take the 1600 relay (3:48.62).

“I’m satisfied with the way everything went,” said Sayen. “I’ve been trying to consistently stay around 50 in the 400. I’m just trying to get stronger for the (Upper Peninsula) Finals.. The 4×4 went real good. This was a great day for everyone. This is kind of bittersweet because this is the last local meet for me. The sport just wouldn’t be the same without Seth Helman and Mark Steffenson. They’ve made this  sport so much fun. I really appreciate the support they gave me through the years.”

Helman, who captured the 1600 (4:43.88) and 3200 (10:45.78), was selected distance MVP for the fourth straight time.

“This was my second best 1600 time,” he said. “My best time was 4:40 in the (Division 1) regional when I was chasing (Negaunee senior) Colton Yesney. Today, I was kind of running by myself, so I’m pleased with my time. The 3200 was bit of a grind because the temperature kept going up. I could feel the heat right through my shoes. Although it’s good to get some heat training in case it’s hot at the Finals (June 2 at Kingsford).”

Cyrus won the 110 hurdles (16.65) and 300s (41.38).

The Gremlins grabbed 4-of-5 places in pole vault with Kameron Simpkins winning at 12-0, edging Huotari on a tie-breaker.

Hancock’s Michael Stuber, who was runner-up in the 100 (11.08) and 200 (24.09), received the league’s top sprinter award and West Iron’s Bryant Schram and Calumet’s Cooper Twardzik shared the throwers’ award.

Schram took shot put (48-8 1/4) and placed second in discus (126-0). Twardzik copped disc (131-0) and Twardzik was runner-up in shot (41-7 1/2).

Houghton junior Anabel Needham earned Overall MVP honors for the girls, taking the 1600 in a personal-best 5:25.12, 3200 (12:34.5), long jump (15-100 and helping the winning 3200 relay (10:55.85).

“Getting a PR in the 1600 was a surprise to me,” said Needham, also a national class cross country skier. “I love running in the cool weather. I just put ice on my neck before the race and it helped me cool down. I also sat in the shade and stayed hydrated between events. I’m trying to get under 5:20 in the Finals.”

Teammate Kendra Monette was named top sprinter in the West-PAC after taking the 100 (13.53) and 200 (28.85). She also won shot (37-1 3.4).

Hancock’s Ellie Sturos captured the 800 (2:38.78) and took second in the 1600 (5:29.25), receiving the distance MVP award.

West Iron’s Rachel Tefft was selected the league’s top thrower, winning disc with a personal-best 114-4 and taking third in shot (35-1/2). Hancock’s Katherine Jarvis was runner-up in shot (36-2).

“It felt like I had a better throw than it was (in shot), but I lost my balance on a couple throws,” said Tefft. “I was really warmed up for disc. Once I knew I got first, I really whipped it out there. This is definitely a confidence boost for me in disc. I have some work to do in shot and I’ll practice with a heavier shot before  (Division 2) Finals.”

The WestPAC is expected to have a different look next year when many of the Mid-Peninsula Conference schools join the current league members.

“This is the true WestPac to me,” said Sayen. “These are the teams I’ve competed with for years.”
