Houghton jumps into first place

TAPIOLA — Houghton took over first place in the 50 and Over Softball League by knocking off South Range Thursday night.

Now 5-1 on the season, Houghton used the five-hit pitching of Steve Dunstan to down Range by a 13-3 score.

Kevin Tormala, Tom Legault, Jim Perrin and Dunstan rapped out three hits each for the winners, who led from start to finish.

Joe Rossi was the losing pitcher for the now 3-2 Range, which got two hits from Brien Ricci.

In the other game, Chassell’s Mitch Lake and Tapiola’s Len Juntunen matched pitches in a low-scoring 7-3 contest.

Lake was the winning pitcher, giving up just six hits.

Juntunen allowed ten base raps.

Chassell, which turned three double plays in the game, received two hits each from Daryl Putala and Charlie Kemppainen.

Tapiola was led by Jim Matt with a pair of safeties.
