Loading Zone II/Calumet Golf Club takes two in women’s softball

Eddie O’Neill/Daily Mining Gazette Superior National Bank’s Rosalie Anderson readies a throw to first base during a game against Loading Zone II/Calumet Golf Club Monday at Calumet Legion Field.

CALUMET — It was a chilly evening at the Calumet Legion Park Monday. The cold weather did not squelch the hot bats of the ladies from Loading Zone II/Calumet Golf Club as they defeated Superior National Bank (SNB), 10-8, in the first game and then Auto Pro Glass and Tire in the nightcap, 12-8.

In the opener, Adena Anderson of SNB started things off with a bang by striking out three of the first five Loading Zone batters.

In the bottom of the second they scored the first run of the game as Rachael Kinnunen reached first with a walk. She advanced to second on a fielder’s choice to the pitcher and then home on a smash hit by Kim Aho to right field.

SNB scored five more runs in the third with base hits by Aho and Molly Berg and a triple by Rosalie Anderson.

It did not look good for ladies from Loading Zone. However, they battled back in the fourth, scoring seven. Caitlyn Zerbst, Taylor Vertin and Molly Helminen each lined balls to the outfield in consecutive order. Missed fly balls by Superior’s Abby Bjorn and left fielder Andrea L’Esperance helped SNB’s cause.

Despite giving up eight runs, Loading Zone pitcher Delaney Heinonen was consistent and had good defensive play behind her as she pitched a complete game with five strikeouts.

SNB battled hard and retook the lead in the top of the sixth thanks to two more runs, but it wasn’t enough. Loading Zone finished things off in the bottom of the sixth with a game-winning RBI from Taylor Vertin.

The game was called after six innings due to time.

Loading Zone kept their bats rolling in in the nightcap against Auto Pro.

Hanna Rautiola knocked in two runs in the top of the first with a double to left center. Loading Zone hurler MacKenzie LePage retired the first six batters in order. Despite the hot start, three walks in a row did not help her cause in the top of the third as Auto Pro’s Mackenzie Brunet hit a double to the left-center fence, scoring Julia Hendrickson and Sarah Audette.

After three innings Loading Zone held a 4-2 lead.

AutoPro bounced back with four runs in the fourth in part due to multiple walks by Lepage that turned into runs with hits by Kierstyn Codere, Emme Rowe and a hard-hit double through the middle infield by Alexa Destrampe.

But, the ladies from Loading Zone couldn’t be stopped as they took the lead back in their half of the fourth with RBI’s by Megan Peterson and a bases-clearing double by Heinonen, who was playing third. After four, Loading Zone then led, 8-6.

They would keep the lead by adding a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Auto Pro tallied one more in the fifth and one in the sixth but fell short as the ladies from Loading Zone held on for the win.

With those two wins, Loading Zone moves to 3-1 in league play. SNB fell to 4-2 while Auto Pro fell to 2-4.

NORTHERN MICHIGAN WINS BIG

Northern Michigan Land Brokers won big over Mattila Rock and Dock, 17-2, at Chassell Field.

Harlee Froberg led the way offensively with three singles. Gael Filpus and Raili Therrian both picked up doubles for Northern Michigan as well.

Grace Laitila had three singles for Mattila in the contest.
