L’Anse downs Westwood in home opener in straight sets

L’ANSE — The L’Anse Purple Hornets volleyball team earned a three-set victory over the Westwood Patriots to open the home portion of their 2018 season.

The Purple Hornets won 25-7, 25-18, 25-8, to take the match.

“It was a good first week for us,” said coach Callie Budweg. “The girls came out with momentum and have been working a lot on the initial setup of our plays and improving off the transition.”

Brianna Keinz led the way offensively with six kills in the contest. Kailyn Voskuhl was tough on the serve, picking up 13 points, including five off aces. She also added four kills.

Brynn Vanburen was also strong on the serve, helping the Purple Hornets earn eight points on the night.

“It was great to able to see everyone get into the game tonight and make big contributions to the team as well,” Budweg said.

Haley Nankervis led defensively with five blocks. Setter Mandy Gransell also had a strong night with 10 service points, 5 from aces, and 15 assists.
