Copper Kings cruise to fifth straight win, 8-2, over Eagles

Daily Mining Gazette/Eddie O’Neill Calumet’s Tanner Rowe turns up ice with the puck during a game Friday against Utica Eisenhower at the Calumet Colosseum.

CALUMET — The Calumet Copper Kings continued their winning ways on Friday night as they gave the Utica Eisenhower Eagles an 8-2 drubbing at the Calumet Colosseum. The Copper Kings advanced to 5-2 on the season with their only two losses coming to Cranbrook earlier this year.

“It’s what I expected,” said Eagles coach Bob Hall, in reference to what his team was facing in coming into the Calumet Colosseum. “But we came out flat and didn’t execute our game plan.”

It did not take long for the Copper Kings to get on the board — just 43 seconds to be exact. Brent Loukus pushed in the puck that was loose in front of the net past Andrew Grewette.

The goal was the first of three goals for Brent Loukus. Both he and his cousin Scott had hat tricks on the night.

Scott’s first goal followed Brent’s at 7:06 as he grabbed the puck at the top of the faceoff circle and slapped it past Grewette.

Brent would follow with the final tally of the first period as he scored on a breakaway. He picked up the puck at the Eagles’ side of the red line and skated in to poke one in at 11:15.

Scott would kick off the scoring in the second period as he slapped a rebound past Grewette at 2:15. His third came two minutes later as he launched a wrist shot from the right of the faceoff circle.

The hats came flying onto the ice.

Two minutes later they came back on the ice when Brent notched his third goal of the night with a slapshot from the crease that Grewette could not find.

Copper Kings coach Dan Giachino was pleased with both Loukus boys.

“It was great to see those two get the hat tricks,” he said. “They are developing some chemistry out there playing on the same line, and now they are finding the back of the net.”

Giachino was also happy to see his team play hard through the whole game. Over the past two nights, the Copper Kings have put in 14 goals. They outshot the Eagles Friday 38-13.

Despite being down 6-0, the Eagles were not giving up as they finally got on the scoreboard in the third. Jake Latorella grabbed a loose puck in the crease and lifted it to the back of the net past Copper Kings netminder Sam Kiiskila at 7:41.

Jason Geiger put in another Eagle goal at 11:42.

“That was the only bright spot of the night,” said Hall. “It was good to see that our guys didn’t let their guard down and we got two.”

The Eagles fall to 0-5-2 on the season. They racked up eight penalty minutes while the Copper Kings had two. The Eagles will take on the Houghton Gremlins Saturday at Dee Stadium at 1 p.m.
