Copper Kings lose to Mountaineers in overtime

CALUMET — The Calumet Copper Kings boys basketball team led by as many as 14 points over a very strong Iron Mountain Mountaineers team at home Friday night.

A late bucket by Foster Wonders forced overtime, and the Mountaineers went on to score all seven points in the extra session to seal a 78-71 road victory.

“Two of the best teams in the U.P. played tonight,” said Copper Kings coach Mike Ojala. “Those in attendance got to see a heck of a game.

“It was a crazy game. I think we were up by 14 at point, but we got stagnant.”

Brevin Antilla hit two three’s in the opening quarter for Calumet. Matt Ojala added four field goals and a free throw as the Copper Kings put up 18 points in the opening eight minutes of play. Antilla finished his night with five three-pointers.

Marcus Johnson, who was held off the board in the first quarter, started the comeback for the Mountaineers in the second by burying seven free throws as part of a 10-point quarter and a 28-point night.

Calumet, who led 36-33 at half, struggled in the third quarter, scoring just nine points. Wonders quietly picked up nine of his 29 points on the night to help Iron Mountain put 18 points in that eight-minute span.

Evan Ekdahl hit a pair of free throws, his only points of the night, in the fourth quarter to help the Copper Kings regain the lead only to have Wonders answer just shy of the buzzer to force the overtime.

“We ran out of gas,” said Mike Ojala. “We had three guys foul out: Matt, Travis (Ojala), and Eli McParlan. We had some guys really step up.

“Brandon Antilla hit a big three. Evan Ekdahl made two big free throws for us.”

In overtime, Johnson made three free throws to lead all scorers. Wonders and Charlie Gerhard each added baskets and Jaden Vicenzi made a free throw as the Mountaineers earned the win.
