Jets sink Falcons with four-goal middle period, 6-3

GAYLORD — The Jeffers Jets hockey opened the Gaylord Division 3 Challenge with a 6-3 win over the FNV Griffins Friday.

The Jets had six different goal scorers find the back of the net. Matthew Halonen paced the offense with a goal and two assists.

“We were finding the back of the net, which was good to see,” said Jets coach Patrick Nettell. “We played a real gritty game and came out on top.”

The Jets struck first 6:42 in when David Storm scored unassisted.

Jordan Keranen picked up the second goal of the opening frame when he struck at 10:06. Halonen picked up an assist on the play.

The Griffins cut the lead in half only to have Halonen score less than 40 seconds later at 4:55 to regain the two-goal advantage.

Jackson Rocchi put the Jets up 4-1 with a goal at 8:07 with assists from Kellen Klein and Evan Larson. Elias Rajala then struck 1:20 later to put the Jets ahead by four, 5-1.

Jonathan Mantila made it 6-1 with a goal at 10:35. Halonen picked up an assist on the tally.

The Griffins struck late in the second and again early in the third, but could not solve Nolan Nettell after that.

The Jets return to action Saturday when they face Grand Rapids Catholic Central.
