Girls Roundup: Jeffers wins, Calumet loses

Marquette 68, Calumet 35

MARQUETTE — Avery Ledy scored 18 of her game-high 21 points in the first half as Marquette cruised to a 68-35 victory over Calumet in an nonconference girls basketball game played at the Redettes’ gym on Wednesday.

The Redettes shot almost 45 percent from the field and grabbed 49 rebounds, led by Sydney Kivi’s 15. Calumet had just 15 rebounds as a team.

Avery Ledy led Marquette’s offense with 21 points, while Kivi had 15 and Aspen Michelin 13. Elli Djerf was Calumet’s leader with 17.

“We shot he ball well tonight,” Redettes head coach Ben Smith said. “Avery was 4 for 6 from 3(-pointers), and we were 7 of 11 as a team. Obviously, that helps when you see the ball go in.

“Sydney had 15 and 15 (points and rebounds) and I think everybody on our team got a rebound and four or five of them got five or more. I think we were a little more consistent in our efforts tonight.”

Marquette (10-2) held a 14-8 lead after the first quarter, extending it to 37-17 and pulling away further in the second half.

“We’re seeing some positives, but there are definitely other things we have to improve on as we move forward to get where we want to be,” Smith said.

The Redettes also won the JV game 59-24. Marquette plays at Menominee Friday.
