Girls roundup: L’Anse, Ewen win Monday

L’Anse 56, Ontonagon 44

L’ANSE — At L’Anse, Maija Rice scored 15 points and Addison Mattson 14 to lead the Purple Hornets, who held onto the No. 5 position in the U.P. girls poll in Division 4, Monday.

L’Anse (6-4) led 16-12 after one quarter and 33-27 at halftime, pulling away in the fourth quarter with a 15-9 advantage.

“It was a good win for L’Anse,” Hornets head coach Scott Lloyd said. “It was an up-and-down game all night.”

Kailyn Voskuhl added 12 points for L’Anse, while Holly Wardynski paced Ontonagon with 13.

The Hornets made 10 of 12 free throws (83 percent) as the Gladiators were 4 of 7 (57 percent), though Ontonagon held a 6-2 advantage in 3-pointers.

L’Anse plays at next-door rival and Division 4 No. 4 Baraga on Thursday.

Ewen-Trout Creek 65, Republic-Michigamme 21

REPUBLIC — At Republic, Nikki Wertanen scored seven points and made three free throws, the only ones made by the Hawks Monday.

E-TC, No. 2 in the U.P. girls Division 4 poll, raced to leads of 22-8 after one quarter and 39-10 at halftime.

Kaitlin Ambuehl added five points for R-M, which hosts Jeffers on Wednesday.

Kate Borseth scored 19 points for the Panthers, while teammate Abby LeGault added 17 and Elise Besonen 15.

EWEN-TROUT CREEK — Berglund 2-2-6, LeGault 8-1-17, Schutz 2-0-4, Borseth 7-2-19, Besonen 6-3-15, Moilanen 2-0-5. Totals 27-8-65.

REPUBLIC-MICHIGAMME — Radcliffe 1-0-3, Raisanen 1-0-2, Ambuehl 2-0-5, Erickson 2-0-4, Wertanen 2-3-7. Totals 8-3-21.
