Gremlins skiiers fight through tough Tuesday at Ripley

RIPLEY — On Tuesday, the Houghton/Hancock Gremlins ski team hosted Marquette, Ironwood and Norway for the Mont Ripley UP Conference ski race. The boys finished fourth in the slalom and third in the giant slalom. The girls finished second in the slalom and second in the giant slalom.

In the boys’ slalom, Houghton’s Reed Heathman had a strong day, finishing his first run in 28.85, which was third. His second run was also strong at 28.44, which was also good for third. His combined total was 57.29.

The next closest racer for Houghton was Justus Tropmann, who posted runs of 40.14 and 40.03, which gave him a combined time of 1:20.17.

In the giant slalom, Heathman finished his first run with a time of 33.31, good for fourth. His second run was slightly better at 33.14, but his combined time was 1:06.45, which was good for fourth overall.

Tropmann finished his first run in 37.29, good for 13th. He improved to 37.21 in his second run and finished 12th with a combined time of 1:14.50.

On the girls’ side, Houghton’s Lydia Salmi finished her first slalom run with a time of 30.75, which was third. She then struggled a little, falling to a time of 31.08 in her second run, but finished fourth overall with a time of 1:01.83.

Keegan Leonard had a good first run of 32.48 before finishing her second run in 32.84. She finished seventh overall with a combined time of 1:05.32.

In the giant slalom, Salmi finished her first run in 33.57, which was good for fourth after the run. She finished her second run in 33.75, giving her a fourth-place finish overall with a combined time of 1:07.32.

Leonard was also strong in her first run at 34.43. Her second run was faster, at 34.36, giving her a combined time of 1:08.79, good for fifth overall.

Chloe Morley was also good in the giant slalom. Her initial run was completed in 34.97, which was good for eighth. She completed her second run in 34.50, giving a combined time of 1:09.47, which was good for seventh.
