Double trouble: Copper Kings take two from Purple Hornets

build off a strong split against Houghton earlier this week, the Calumet Copper Kings softball team did just that while in the friendly confines of Legion Field in Calumet. The Copper Kings swept the L’Anse Purple Hornets, 15-8 and 14-2.

In the opener, Elli Djerf walked to lead off the contest. She was later brought home by Jonna Berg with a sacrifice fly.

Jana Loukus folled with walked and later scored on a two-run home run by Morgan Erkkila.

In the bottom of the second, the Purple Hornets got on the board when Haley Nankervis turned a walk into a run when she scored two batters later. The Purple Hornets added one more before the final out of the inning.

Megan Peterson, looking to regain a two-run lead for the Copper Kings, tripled in the bottom of the second. Djerf then sacrificed to bring her home.

The Purple Hornets got back on the board in the fourth when Maija Rice singled and later scored on a single.

In the bottom of the fourth, Vera Peterson sparked a four-run inning for the Copper Kings with a triple. Berg followed with a double, bringing Peterson home. Sammy Plante then tripled to bring Berg home before Andrea Kariniemi sacrificed to score Plante and put Calumet up, 10-3.

L’Anse answered in the top of the fifth with a four-run outburst that included a single by Josie Rice, a single from Nankervis, and an RBI single from Maija Rice. In between the singles from Josie Rice and Nankervis, Jaylyn Foy blasted a three-run home run.

Looking to bounce back, the Copper Kings did just that in the bottom of the fifth.

Djerf led off by reaching first on a hit-by-pitch. She later scored on a triple by Vera Peterson. Berg then knocked Peterson home with a single. Erkkila then drilled her second two-run homer of the game to push the Copper Kings to a 14-7 lead.

After L’Anse scored one run in the top of the sixth, the Copper Kings again added to their total as Djerf reached on an error and later scored on a single by Vera Peterson.

In the nightcap, the Copper Kings again started quickly with a single from Djerf to lead off. Vera Peterson singled and Berg brought them both home with a double. Berg was later brought home by a sacrifice from Plante.

In the second inning, the Copper Kings stretched their lead to 9-0 on the strength of the top of their batting order.

Djerf singled. Loukus was hit-by-pitch. Vera Peterson drove in a run with a single. Berg then followed with a two-run single. Erkkila walke and Plante followed with a two-run double. Kristi Keranen closed out the scoring with a single.

Foy and Nankervis scored the Purple Hornets’ runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively, with the Copper Kings’ offense finding home in between for three more runs.

Djerf got things started with a double. Verg Peterson walked. Berg brought Djerf home with a single. Plante followed two batters later with a two-run triple.

The Copper Kings added two more runs in the fourth when Molly Helminen singled and scored on a single by Danika Billeck and Djerf walked and later scored.
