Dean Kangas earns win

STANTON — Looking to bounce back from a tough 3-1 loss on Tuesday, Dean Kangas-State Farm used a four-run third inning and a five-run fifth to earn a 10-6 victory over Garnet Garage at Stanton Field Thursday.

Dean Kangas got things going immediately as player-manager Brian Juopperi singled and later scored on a Scott Wesa single.

Will Romano answered for Garnetin the bottom of the first when he singled, advanced on a wild pitch to second, and later scored on a single by Alex Kissel.

Garnet threatened to take lead in the second with Mike Saari just 90 feet from home, but Dean Kangas tightened up defensively and kept him there.

Dean Kangas then broke the game open in the third with a four-run outburst.

Luke Paul got things going with a leadoff walk. Catcher Scott Pietila singled. Two batters later, pitcher Jason Koski singled. Travis Wesa walked to bring in a run. Over the next couple of batters, Dean Kangas added three more runs before Austin Kuivanen grounded out to end the inning.

In an attempt to rally, Garnet scored three times in the fourth.

Kissel singled. Jordan Reynolds reached on a defensive error. Mike Saari singled. Elliot Majlessi reached on a fielder’s choice.

After pitcher Chris Saari struck out, Mike Saari was tagged out at third on Majlessi’s fielder’s choice. Justin Norkol reached on a defensive error and Will Romano followed with a single and suddenly Garnet was back within one, 5-4.

In the top of the fifth, things went south for Garnet as Koski led off with a walk. Travis Wesa reached on a defensive error. Kyle Koski reached on a fielder’s choice. Kuivanen doubled, knocking in two runs.

Juopperi singled. Paul walked and Pietila reached on an error and all of a sudden, the one-run advantage turned into a six-run lead as Dean Kangas found themselves up 10-4 after Scott Wesa grounded out.

Garnet did not give up, however. In the seventh, Reynolds reached on an error. Mike Saari then singled. Both scored on a double by Chris Saari.

Unfortuately, that was all the hosts could muster up, however, as a pair of ground outs ended the threat.
