Kids Fishing Day on Saturday

File Photo The Rockland Pond will host the annual Kids Fishing Day this Saturday. Poles, Bait, and even food provided for the kids, along with games and prizes.

The Rockland Pond Kids Day will be this Saturday. The annual event is another community event put on by the Upper Peninsula Sport Fisherman’s Association. The volunteer organization strives to get children into fishing.

“All you need to do is bring the kids to the Rockland pond. Fishing poles and bait will be provided. We even feed the kids by having hot dogs and pop,” said Larry Greig, U.P. Sport Fisherman’s Association Events Coordinator.

The day includes games for the children, including a casting contest. Prizes will be handed out to the children.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The pond has been a cooperative effort to promote fishing by Rockland Township, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, UP Sport Fisherman’s Association, and American Legion Post 92.

“The Kids Day is sponsored by the Rockland American Legion, Ontonagon VFW, Lake Shore Systems, and the Rockland Depot. I really want to thank them in helping us get kids into fishing,” Greig said. “It’s another community event put on by the U.P. Sport Fisherman’s Association.”

The organization is also working on getting more women into fishing. They will be hosting the Powder Puff Challenge on Aug. 17. The event will be based out of the Ontonagon Marina, where the Captain’s Meeting and sign up will take place at 6 a.m.

The Powder Puff Challenge will go from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Entry fee is $40.00, with the winning team getting $200. All the proceeds from this tournament will go to the U.P. Sport Fisherman’s Association.
