Lakes relay teams set school records, but finish 2nd at UP Finals

KINGSFORD — The Lake Linden-Hubbell boys gave chase, but couldn’t keep pace with Bessemer here in Saturday’s Upper Peninsula Division 3 Track Finals.

Bessemer retained its title with 136 points and the Lakes edged Brimley 67-66 for runner-up honors.

The Lakes, however, swept the sprint relays by taking the 400 at 46.23 seconds and the 800 in a school-record 1:36.06. The Speedboys were runners-up in the 800 relay (1:36.26), setting a second school record in the process.

“We just tried to run faster than them,” said junior Carter Crouch, who anchored both relays. “I felt if I could at least be even with their guy at the last turn, we’d have a shot (in the 800 relay). Handoffs make or break the sprint relays and ours went real well. We’ve been close with Bessemer all year.”

Lakes’ junior Cole Gregoire won high jump at six feet and long jump (19-9) and placed third in the 300 hurdles in 43.63 seconds.

Caleb Gregoire took third in the 110 hurdles at 17.23 seconds, just .01 second ahead of Cole.

Ontonagon senior Noah Lukkari won the 400 in 52.56 seconds and placed third in the 800 (2:02.36) and Chassell senior Sam Wilson was runner-up in discus at 140 feet.

Bessemer senior Uriah Aili set U.P. and school records in the 800 (1:59.93), 1600 (4:28.68) and 3200 (10:08.51).

His brother Isaiah had set the U.P. 800 record a year ago (2:01.08). Cedarville junior Thomas Bohn set the 1600 record (4:32.24) last year and Ryan Holm of Wakefield had been the 3200 record-holder (10:10.1) for 17 years.

Stephenson senior Montell Glover set a U.P. record in the 100 at 11.19, shaving .01 second off the previous best by Travis Bellefueille in 2001.

The Gladstone boys captured the D-1 championship for the first time in six years with 127 points. Westwood and four-time defending champ Marquette shared runner-up honors at 97.

Calumet junior Alex Studebaker placed second in shot put (43-5 1/4) and Houghton junior Joe Wood was runner-up in the 3200 (10:22.42).

The Copper Kings were runners-up in the sprint relays and junior Nick Djerf was third in long jump (18-9 1/2) and fourth in discus (118-0). Djerf was part of the 1600-meter relay team along with Matt and Travis Ojala and Dryden Nelson, which set a new school record.

Escanaba senior Dayton Miron established a U.P. and school pole vault record at 13-8, an inch better than the previous U.P. record by Mike Coyne of Gladstone in 2007. Miron’s effort also beat the former school record (13-6 3/4) by John Noblet in 1972.

The Ishpeming boys retained their D-2 crown with 128 points, followed by Mewberry 84 and Norway 75.

Hancock sophomore Austin Salani won pole vault at 12 feet this time, 10 days after a school-record leap of 13 feet in the WestPAC Conference meet at Houghton.
