Rintala, Miller win two-woman scramble
For the fourth time in the past 10 years, the team of Holly Rintala and Michelle Miller captured the title in the Women’s Two-Person Scramble at Michigan Technological University’s Portage Lake Golf Course, Tuesday.
The pair shot a 4-under 68 to edge sisters Andrea (Penegor) Longhini and Marcia (Penegor) Butvilas by a single stroke. The eventual winners held a seemingly commanding four-stroke lead heading into the back nine only to see Longhini and Butvilas shoot a blistering 4-under 31 to nearly pull even.
Miller and Rintala hung on to add yet another trophy to their collecetion.
The Marquette team of Karla McCutcheon and Jennifer Michelin shot an even-par 72 to finish third, one stroke better than defending champs Maren Rouleau and Kathy Penegor.
The Chassell duo of Julie Melchiori and Barb Anderson won First Flight. The Wakefield team of Nancy Osier and Mary Hintz took second. Houghton’s Sheryl Sorby and Sylvie Rokosh finished third.
In Second Flight, Mary Mattson and Jane Rowe of Pelkie finished first. The Calumet duo of Mary Yeo and Rhonda Frimidig took second. The team of Amy Chapin and Kaitlyn McKay took third.
Toivola’s Sarah Domitrovich and Ontonagon’s Marilyn Anderson took top honors in Third Flight. Amy Storm and Carol Helminen finished second. Diane Woodworth and Claire Storm took third.
The next tournament at PLGC will be a Upper Peninsula Golf Association Junior Tournament Monday (July 15). Other events upcoming include another Senior Scramble July 17, Couples Tournament July 20 and the Club Championship July 27-28. For more details, call 487-2641.
