Houghton earns Over 50 regular season title with win Thursday

TAPIOLA — Houghton finished as the first place team in the Over 50 Softball League in the final night of play, thanks to an upset win by South Range.

Range defeated Chassell by an 8-2 score earlier in the evening, leaving the losers with an 8-4 record. That is the same record as Houghton, which won the tiebreaker by virtue of two wins in head-to-head play this summer.

Houghton pitcher Joe Rossi allowed just five hits in winnng it. Mitch Lake gave up 16 safeties in defeat. Dave Fehringer and Dave Cvengros had three hits for the victors, with Brian Anderson and Rossi collecting two each.

Jim LaChance and Daryl Putala cracked out two hits for Chassell.

Houghton downed Tapioia by a 9-4 score.

Jim Perron, Darren Hietala, Dave Kamerand, Tom LeGault and Steve Dunstan all counted two hits for the winners.

Jim Kemppainen and Steve Bella had two raps for winless Tapiola.

Scott Madajewski was the winning pitcher, with Len Juntunen taking the loss.

The playoffs begin on Monday in Tapiola, Houghton will meet Tapiola at 6:15 p.m., while Chassell and Range clash at 7:15 p.m.
