BARAGA — The Baraga Vikings captured a big win on the volleyball court Wednesday night as they downed the Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-16).

“Yes we won, but I am not happy with all the passing errors tonight,” said Baraga head coach Corey Pietila. “We came out in that first set and had too many passing errors.”

Things got better in the second set as the jolted out to a 13-8 lead and kept going.

“We had much better passing in that second set,” Pietala said. “With better passing comes better setting and then good swings.”

She added that she was very pleased with the offensive attack of junior Riley Koskinen.

“Riley had three kills on the night and that came because of good passing,” she said. “She was really hitting the ball well and did a phenomenal job tonight.”

Another force to deal with was the serve of Jaylyne Lindemann. The junior routinely put up five or six points on the board when she stepped up to the line in the service rotation.

The victory puts Baraga at 2-4 on the season. Pietala added that the girls are gaining confidence with wins like last night’s.

“They see now that they can compete with the better teams,” she said.

On the other side of the net, the Blue Bolts are struggling not just to win a game but just win a set on the 2019 season.

“We are a young team with just one senior,” Dollar Bay head coach Martha Storm said. “We have moments of success, and then there will be a missed ball or an error, and the girls get down on themselves and give up. That’s our struggle.”

Dollar Bay’s best set was the third as they commanded an early 8-5 lead only to let the Vikings to crawl back into the lead.

“It is an attitude thing we need to work on,” Storm said. “There is a lot of potential here. On the bright side, I will say that girls are getting better, and we are having fun.”
