LAKE LINDEN — The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes girls basketball team kept the Watersmeet Nimrods one step behind them on Tuesday win a 34-27 win.

“We are improving,” said LL-H head coach Jack Johnson. “The girls played with a lot of heart and battled hard for the win.”

The game started out as a back-and-forth match up. The two teams tied at four points in the first quarter and then again at nine in the second. However, at the halfway mark through the second, LL-H began to pull away with a lead. At half time they were up 18-13.

The Lakes (2-1) had three girls with nine points. They were seniors Megan Corrigan, Jamie Hendrickson and junior Melissa Wagner. Johnson was particularly pleased with the play of Wagner.

“She is such a play maker,” he said. “She is aggressive and gets fouled and will end up at the foul line. Those plays pick us up as a team.”

For the Nimrods (0-4), the second half of the game was their best. In the third quarter they outscored the Lakes 8-5. However, it wouldn’t be enough as the Lakes defense stayed the course.

Head coach of the Nimrods, Brent Besonen, said he was pleased with play of his freshmen.

He had four freshmen step up and score points. Ontionna Brunk had four points and Serena Poler sunk three. Hailey Pallin and Allison Green both had tow points on the night.

“Serena really played well,” he said. “She takes charge down low as pulled in quite a few rebounds.”

Despite the win, Johnson said the Lakes have some work to do on both ends of the court.

“We need to be better at being poised with the ball,” he said. We are still learning and filling roles.”

The Lakes will face Ewen-Trout Creek on Friday.
