Jets earn tourney win

L’ANSE — Jeffers claimed the title at the 55th Annual Eighth Grade Boys Basketball Tournament hosted by L’Anse on Saturday. The Jets dispatched Lake Linden 65-30 in the championship game to complete an undefeated season and a 24-0 record over the last two years.

Semifinal 1–Jeffers 55, Houghton 38

Jeffers advanced to the championship via a win over a scrappy Houghton team in the first semifinal. The Jets opened up a nine point lead in the second quarter behind the strength of three 3-pointers from Lincoln Just.

The Gremlins hung around thanks to the play of Kyle Primeau, who netted a game-high 18 points. Jeffers had four different players with at least seven points led by Just’s 16.

Semifinal 2– Lake Linden 50, Calumet 48

Lake Linden scored 22 points in the fourth quarter including five in the final 30 seconds to upset Calumet 50-48. Trailing 47-39 with three minutes to go, the Lakes closed the game on an 11-1 run. Ben Davis knocked down a corner 3-pointer to tie the game at 48-all with 28 ticks left. Gabriel Popke scored the go-ahead basket with five seconds remaining.

Alan Bjorn tallied a game-high 26 points for the Copper Kings. Popke posted 25 points for the Lakes.

Championship–Jeffers 65, Lake Linden 30

Jeffers used a stifling full-court press to open the game on a 20-0 run. Six different Jets had points in the opening quarter as the top seed opened up a 22-4 advantage. The margin was 42-8 at halftime after Just dropped in 12 of his game-high 15 points in the second quarter.

Four Jets scored in double figures. Levi Frahm posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Malaki Mattila notched a career-high 10 points.

Jackson Lister scored a team-high seven points for Lake Linden.
