NEGAUNEE — Despite a better mental focus on the basketball court Friday night, the Houghton Gremlins could not keep pace with the sharp-shooting Negaunee Miners as they went down 66-50.

The Miners had three girls in double figures. Alyssa Hill led the scoring with 22 points. Chloe Norman followed with 16 and Alyssa Nelson poured in 16 points — all from past the three-point arc.

“We battled hard,” said Houghton’s head coach Julie Filpus. “But Negaunee’s overall balance and offensive skills were too much for us.”

The Gremlins best quarter was the fourth where they outscored the Miners 20-16. Stella Wickstrom had 11 rebounds and Maryellen Trewhella had 17 points and 10 boards for Houghton.

Panthers rout Lakes

EWEN — The Ewen Trout-Creek Panthers began their game with a full-court press that pinned the LL-H Lakes down hard for much of the game.

“Our press gave us a jump start tonight. We had 16 steals and 12 assists to just five turn overs,” said E-TC head coach Jacky Besonen.

The Panthers had three girls in double figures. Abbie LaGault led with 16 points, seven rebounds and six steals . Paige Bergland and Ellie Besonen followed with 15 points each. Berglund had three steals and Besonen had four assists.

“The ladies did a nice job of running the floor offensively,” Besonen said. “It was another awesome team win with unselfish offensive and aggressive defense.”
