Girls Basketball: Lakes cruise past Blue Bolts

DOLLAR BAY — Aside from local bragging rights there wasn’t a great deal at stake in Tuesday’s Lake Linden-Hubbell-Dollar Bay-Tamarack City girls basketball game.

The two rivals came into the game with a combined four wins (three by the Lakes). But the two schools battled hard, nonetheless, in a game won by LL-H by a 46-22 margin.

“When we play them (Blue Bolts), there’s always a little bit extra going on,” Lakes’ coach Jack Johnson said afterward. “We were able to finish our offense in the second half and that was the main difference.”

Bolts’ skipper Steve Krahling agreed with his counterpart.

“We played OK in the first quarter,” Krahling said.

“But our shooting was just awful after that.”

The Lakes (4-5) held a slim 8-7 lead after one quarter and were still just up by an 18-10 margin at the half.

Johnson — in his first season at LL-H — said the young Blue Bolts appeared to get rattled in the third frame.

“You’re going to find that with a young team like Dollar Bay,” he said. “And we started to hit some shots we missed in the first half.”

The result was a 14-5 third period surge that made it a 32-15 score with just a quarter remaining.

Jamie Hendrickson and Melissa Wagner combined for 10 points in the telltale frame. The two also spearheaded a defense that forced DB into numerous mistakes.

“We made a lot of unforced errors,” Krahling said. “You can’t do that and expect to be in a game.”

Hendrickson, a senior, pumped in 19 points to lead all scorers. Wagner, a junior, was good for 8 points and seven steals for the Lakes. Megan Corrigan totaled seven points and 10 rebounds.

“I thought Jamie (Hendrickson) played with a lot of confidence and took the ball to the basket,” Johnson said. “I thought we played with composure for the most part.”

Dollar Bay-TC, was paced by Ashlea Datto with 9 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lakes go to Wakefield on Friday night. The 1-8 Bolts will meet Republic-Michigamme on the road the same evening.
